yea the cowl tag should have the trim# for the interior. also pull the carpet back and look at the way the bucket seats are mounted. most guys will just bolt them in when the correct way is with the floor mounted studs. but like one guy said these cars could be ordered any way you wanted back the From the 425 hp 409 to the 230-6 cylinder! Re: 63 Impala SS How do you tell if its real SS? Like Verne said, you have to look at the trim tag. You could make an SS car by collecting all the trim and installing it, including the buckets and console. The tag is the only way you could be sure (assuming it's not switched) The vin won't tell you if it is an SS..the steering wheel should have a script super sport on the horn cap, side mldgs have swirls in the taping, and the rear deck lid mldg should have swirls in it also...Look on E-bay at 62 impalas you might get a close up look at on Look for the number on the engine. Depending on your vehicle model, certain engines are used for the SS package. In muscle cars, a big-block engine was always used. Check with your local Chevrolet parts dealer to determine what the original SS engine is for your model and year
There is another sure way to tell the clones from the real SS. At each end of the speedo the trim will have the same Engine Turned Swirl Pattern as the Trim around the dash controls I put in the VIN for a 1960 2 door sedan and it says its an Impala SS. We all know that there were no SS in 1960. If you look in your book your will see that the 61,62,and 63 Model number listings do not show any SS listings. See pages 21-23 but on page 24 it shows the 1964 Impala SS model numbers 1347,1367,1447,1467
I know for a fact that in 61' the SS package was a dealer-installed option (basically just badges and shit) So anyone could make their 61' an SS if they wanted to. As far as 1963 goes - there really isn't much difference between a standard Impala and an SS so maybe it was just a trim/interior option for that year The 63 Impala requires a little bit of work to determine if the car is a true SS. Unlike other years and models you can't just simply look at the VIN number and tell. The cowl tag is one way to tell and we've shown this Impala's in the pictures below and helped decode it also. 1B - Built second week of January, 1963

The unique VIN number would stick all the way through 1967, with V8 models. All great cars, but my true love is a '63 SS. I love its body lines the best, and compared to the '62 model, it has a much better looking dashboard. Its front and rear design is more defined than that on a '61 or '62 Impala and has more styling cues, while the hood on the 1964 Impala is too square for me
